Mockingbird Taproom

Post by Fred Gumby » Tue Apr 23, 2013 4:04 pm

Following the demise of the Wrexham outlet, the Fat Cat in Chester has also bitten the dust and will close with immediate effect as the chain has gone into administration.

In it's early days the Fat Cat used to be worth visiting as it was a rare outlet in these parts for Storm beers from Macclesfield. Beer quality and choice has been pretty uninspiring in recent times and I can't say I ventured in there much lately other than to deliver the Out Inn Cheshire magazine. It's always sad when any pub shuts especially for people who have lost their jobs so let's hope the closure will only be temporary and that real ale will be to the fore when/if it reopens.

The whole chain, a group of six I am told will stay open and be sold. This includes the Queens head Frodsham, not Chester.

Fred summed it up succinctly. In my opinion, it started out well when there was less competition in town but when that came along I think people forgot about the place or didn't fancy the walk down there and across the ring road.

My best memory was one memorable session in there on Coach House We Three Kings one Xmas with staff from the neighbouring Norry House (aka former Job Centre).

Here's the branch website's version ...

... and soon to be re-born to cash in on the races !

Linenhall Vaults

Good news. Think the Pollard Inn has Scottish & Newcastle beers. Maybe our Wirral correspondent Big Hairy Rob knows more.

According to their website Pollards currently have Theakstons Hogshead Bitter, Caledonian XPA and Deuchars IPA. Maybe we shouldn't expect a beer range as exciting as some of the better pubs in Chester but it's good to see the Fat Cat reopening so quickly.

Fairly sure that the Pollards people were (initially, at least) involved in The Cock and Pullet in Oxton, B'head, which they put a lot of effort into, as they bought it freehold, as opposed to the leasehold they had at Pollards.
C+P started and continued with lots of Brimstage and Liverpool Organic.
I assume Fat Cat will also be leasehold.

Encouraging start under the new regime. The totally unappealing Courage and Directors ales from the Fat Cat days have indeed, as suggested might happen by Supervalkoinen, been replaced by Brimstage Trappers Hat, Sandpiper Light Ale and Rhode Island Red.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !

What a preposterous diatribe. "bare-assed flavour" ??? Does the stuff taste of arse crack sweat or summat ?

Might as well hang a sign over the door saying 'This establishment is run by pretentious dickheads'

I might even send that piece to Pseud's corner at Private Eye.
