Wheelwrights Arms, Elton

Post by Old Yard Dog » Sun Sep 04, 2011 7:32 pm

I had my first pint ever in the Wheelwrights in Elton the week before last, despite having worked almost next door for over 30 years.

If ever a pub should have sold real ale this is it. It is an excellent little community local with lots of character (and dangerously low beams). It had two guests on tap, Batemans Summer Swallow and Batemans All Seasons. You can get there on the no 36 Ellesmere Port - Runcorn (via Cheshire Oaks) bus - or if you are really keen on obscure railway lines - by the two afternoon trains to Ince & Elton station (but I'm not sure what the pub's opening times are)

Revisited the Wheelwrights today and found three handpumps. The Deuchars IPA had just gone off but Coach House Innkeepers Special Reserve and a Courage beer had just come on. A nice village local but tall customers like myself need to beware of the low beams.

The pub can now be reached directly from Chester, Ellesmere Port or Runcorn on the X2 bus route (not evenings or Sundays).

Tried to deliver OICs to the Wheelwrights tonight only to find it closed, as were other pubs in the vicinity. Apparently there is a big gypsy funeral in the area tomorrow and tonight is the wake.

Revisited the pub on Sunday and found that both real ales had sold out. I was offered bottles but couldn't be bothered checking whether these were PC (i.e. BC) or not. The pub was chocker and it had been a very unusual weekend. So I gave it the benefit of the doubt and handed over the OICs which were gratefully received.

Wychwood Bah Humbug was the one real ale on sale on Tuesday (8th Jan).

However there were a couple of boxes of proper cider behind the bar from Circle Cider of Swindon: Runabout (medium) and Cats Tongue (dry). Not sure whether real cider is permanent or a one off.
