Excellent pints of Holts Bitter and Two Hoots when I visited on Friday. Almost GBG standard.

You have to pay to park but you get all your money back when you buy a drink.

Re: Duke of Wellington, Ince

There was no real ale on when I called at this newly reopened and refurbished pub last night which is trying very hard to attract new custom. The bar maid said they were not turning over enough and were having to throw beer away. It hasn't gone completely but is only likely to be put on when they ex...

Interesting beer, football and trains trip to Birmingham

Having decided to forsake Bradford's visit to Boston on Saturday expecting a heavy defeat, I thought I would do Coventry City vs Blackpool at St Andrews to fulfil my duty as a member of the 92 Club. And it also afforded me an opportunity to redo Bordesley station which normally only sees one train a...

Re: Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, Connah's Quay

I called in last Monday after picking up my ticket for the Nomads vs Partizan Belgrade and was seriously impressed by the quality of the Old Brewery Bitter - my first 4.5 of the year. The condition and temperature were perfect despite the sweltering heat outside (31C). And it was only £2 a pint. The...

Wheatsheaf, Dunham-on-the-Hill

According to the Chronicle, Greene King have closed this former Greenall's pub which was keg only for many, many years. Latterly it sold one real ale. There's a lot of competition on the A56 between Chester and Helsby so this had to be vulnerable (my view not GK).

Blackboards indicate a good range of cask ales but they only had Courage Directors and Black Sheep Best Bitter on on Saturday night. Having said that, the Directors was in very good nick (3.5). The pub was quite quiet, presumably as most of the diners had left.

Hours are now 2-10 Tue-Thu, 2-10.30 Fri & Sat, 2-7.30 Sun (closed Mon). In addition to three excellent real ales, last night I enjoyed a superb bottle of Frank Boon's Marriage Parfait Gueuze. At £5.50 for a 37.5 ml bottle, it was actually far cheaper than most bars in Belgium where you can pay up t...
